Walter Bailey
Void and Vessel
As part of Eastbourne ALIVE, Compass Arts, The Parish of Hampden Park and the Hydneye present: Void and Vessel.
The sculpture, from redwood, is an exploration of being and nonbeing, the mutability of matter. Inspired by Robert Fludd’s creation imagery, a 17th century vision of the interplay of darkness and light as the foundation of all things.
Void and Vessel can be seen from the road on Decoy Drive, Hampden Park on the elevated lawn in front of St Mary’s Parish Church, 11 October until 5 December 2023.
Living in East Sussex, Bailey works exclusively with locally grown trees. He sculpts using hand tools, chainsaws, and fire. His work can be found in public and private collections, in the UK and abroad.
