Renee Vaughan Sutherland at Motcombe Pool House
Eastbourne ALIVE are thrilled to be working with Renee Vaughan Sutherland and Florence Wright on their upcoming residency at Motcombe Pool Caretaker’s House as part of the wraparound programme. The project focuses on community engagement, youth voice, wellbeing and creativity in a space that is much-loved by the locals and will highly benefit of the animation of currently disused rooms.
The project will kick off with a period of research and development, consisting of working in the space, utilising the house as a site to generate work and draw inspiration. During this period, the artists will begin direct outreach, develop workshops and start discussions with the community.
Their findings and work will be presented as an exhibition from 20 February until 25 February 2024, at Motcombe Pool Caretaker’s House.
Renee Vaughan Sutherland’s residency is focused on The Bourne, the freshwater stream that serves as the source of water for Motcombe Pool (when it is operational), centring on the historical and recent experiences of the location. Drawing inspiration from Heraclitus' notion that 'no person ever steps in the same river twice, for it's not the same river and they are not the same person,' she will concentrate on direct outreach and develop workshops and discussions with the community while also co-creating artwork based on memory, collective memory, and the ephemeral nature of memory, whether that spans minutes or centuries. By utilising printmaking, film-based photography, celluloid film, video, and water from Motcombe Pool (and The Bourne) and natural elements from Motcombe Gardens, she aims to produce a body of work that intricately weaves connections and stories through the source - water.
