Read from filmmaker Nathan Gardner, the project lead:
"Eastbourne ALIVE and Turner Prize 2023 brought a challenge to Eastbourne, asking us to reflect on our identity as a town. We invited young creatives across the town to help us capture Eastbourne through their lens, we didn't really know what to expect.
Through our workshops and conversations, some of the folks felt that youth are invisible, lacking true representation. However, we played with these perceptions, and looked at elements that made this town our home.
The seaside, quirky spots like Camilla’s bookshop with its much-loved parrot, well-known high street and recently installed interventions of amazing public art on the library, in the town centre and outside Towner Gallery. All of the above make this our town.
It’a almost like the creation of the video helped us see Eastbourne in a fresh way through young people's lens. It perhaps helped us to start to redefine and rediscover our town as a place that embraces the old, welcomes the new, loves the quirky and celebrates all those things that make Eastbourne truly alive!
Crafting lyrics, Odessa and I vibed with "Sussex by the Sea," a traditional anthem for Sussex. We decided to sample the anthem and give it a fresh twist and shaped our song around love, loss, and identity.
This is our take—straight from the heart."
